As the seat of Clayton County, Jonesboro, GA is home to about 4,700 people. It has a long history of importance to the state of Georgia. The city was originally founded in 1823. It was renamed in 1846 when the Macon and Western Railroad came to the area, and was named after a railroad official. During the Civil War, Jonesboro was the setting for the final fall of Atlanta in 1864, one of the final blows to the Confederate Army.
Though the city is no longer embroiled in battle, there are remnants of the War Between the States. Most notably is the Road to Tara Museum. At this museum, you can relive the Atlanta Campaign, as well as enjoy props and other relics from Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind. Just down the road is Stately Oaks, which is thought to be the inspiration of Scarlett O’Hara’s home from the novel and movie.
