3 Ways to Keep Your Wood Deck Looking Beautiful

As we launch into spring and head toward summer, chances are you will have more than one gathering on your wood deck. From family cookouts to parties with friends, there are any number of reasons why having a deck for your Lake Iris home is a must for the warmer months. However, maintaining it is paramount. Here are 3 ways to keep your wood deck looking beautiful all season long:

1. Clean It Up

Before anything else, you need to clean off the deck. If it’s been a while since you’ve done any sort of upkeep, be sure to sweep off major pieces of debris, like leaves or pine cones. Then, break out the pressure washer to get the dirt and grime off of it. Keep the water stream moving so you don’t damage the wood, then let it dry overnight.

2. Make Your Repairs

With the fluctuation of temperatures all year, having nails pop up in your deck is common. Remove the nail, then use a longer screw to make sure the board stays in place. You should also look for any split boards. If you need to replace one, follow this guide to do so. Taking care of these repairs before your deck is used is important to ensure no one gets injured.

3. Seal After Staining

Once all your repairs are complete, it’s time to take preventative steps to keep the deck beautiful. If you want a new color, use an semi-transparent exterior stain for the deck itself, and a solid stain for the railings and banisters. Follow the directions for the stain that are provided with the product. If you don’t want a different color, use a wood preservative instead. Once it is completely dry, apply a sealant.

Having a deck for your lakehouse is a must, but it does require work. The good news is, one long weekend is enough to get everything taken care of. If you have always dreamed of owning one of the homes for sale on Lake Iris, the team at Dottie & Kate can help you find the perfect one. Contact us today to get started!
